Can't call yourself a plant lover if you don't know these 6 facts.  Ok, maybe you can...but still, there's no denying these facts are pretty cool!

1) First - 85% of the planet’s plant life is found in the water...and the Arctic Ocean (despite being covered by three-foot thick ice) is richer in microscopic marine plants than any other ocean region in the world.

 2) Elephant grass found in Africa can grow to 4.5 meters high. That’s tall enough to hide an elephant…hence the name obviously.

3) A cluster of bananas is called a hand and consists of 10 to 20 bananas, which are known as fingers. Africans are credited for the fruit's name which is thought to be derived from the Arabic word "banan" which means "finger".

4) Oak trees are struck by lightning more than any other tree. Deep central roots and hollow water-filled cells that run up and down the inner bark make this tree the most frequently struck.

5) Dendrochronology is the science of calculating a tree’s age by its rings. But not all trees can be measured so easily. Trees in tropical regions grow at a more uniform speed and don't always form visible rings.

6) The first certified botanical garden was founded by Pope Nicholas III in the Vatican City in 1278 AD. Nicholas was fascinated with the medicinal properties of plants, so in addition to planting orchards and meadows for meditation, he conceived a botanical garden where the healing powers of plants could be studied and cultivated.
