How can we help with the crisis in the Amazon? Forests are the lungs of our planet, and while they are currently burning at a record rate our hearts are breaking. Here’s our list (thank you worldwide web) of 5 ways you can help now:

1. Donate. Since we can’t be there on the ground extinguishing the current fires, we can give back now to help prevent future fires and restore what forest remains. Check out @amazonconservationteam. Their co-founder announced today that 100% of donations will be going directly to rehabilitation of the Amazon and the people that call it home.

2. Sign a petition. A lawyer in Rio Branco has accumulated over 77,000 of his 150,000 signature goal to mobilize an investigation into the Amazonian fires on Change.org. Greenpeace also has a current petition to help protect the lands of indigenous and traditional communities of the Amazon. Doing a little bit of something is always better than doing a bunch of nothing.

3. Use Ecosia.org instead of Google. For every 45 searches you run on ecosia.org, one tree is planted! How many searches do you typically run a day?

4. Reduce your paper, wood, and beef consumption. Check out the Rainforest Alliance website to see if what you're buying is considered rainforest-safe. If it’s not, they have products listed on the site to help you make the switch.
As for the beef, the vast majority of the fires have been set by loggers and ranchers to clear land for cattle and beef farming. Besides the fires, reducing our gloabl beef consumption could also contribute 20% of the effort needed to keep global temperatures from rising 2°C above pre-industrial levels. Bottom line - EAT LESS MEAT.

5. Educate. Like, share, comment, add your suggestions here or simply pass the information on to a friend. The Amazon produces 20% of our planet’s oxygen and if we lose the world’s forests, we lose the fight against climate change.
