Did you know that pure organic, non-GMO cotton can actually save lives? It's true! This is about to get serious, so pay attention.

Conventional cotton production is one of the world's most chemically-intensive crops and uses what the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies as some of the most toxic chemicals.  Add that to the fact that cotton is also the world's most widely grown crop, and it quickly becomes apparent how important the need for more organic cotton production truly is.

Pesticides, insecticides and herbicides used to grow cotton worldwide are deadly to both humans and other species. Of all the crops grown in the world, conventional cotton production accounts for 25% of the world’s insecticides and 10% of the world’s pesticides...that's far more than any other crop in production.

According to the World Health Organization, 20,000 deaths each year are caused by pesticide poisoning in developing countries, and more than 10,000 cancer-related deaths due to such chemical exposure are reported by U.S. farmers each year. And to make matters worse, US Fish and Wildlife Service has reported that pesticides unintentionally kill at least 67 million birds annually in the U.S. alone. But yet, only 1% of all cotton grown is done so organically.

So what does "organic cotton" mean exactly? Organic cotton means grown using both materials and methods that have a low impact on our environment. In order to be verified as "organic," third-party certification organizations require that cotton production:

  • Replenishes and maintains soil fertility
  • Prohibits the use of GMO seeds
  • Is grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides
  • Requires all fertilizers used to be labeled as "non-synthetic"
